Description

Magic in the Streets of Macau

Carlos Dias, local photographer with credentials and international awards, will present an exhibition of photographs entitled "Magic in the Streets of Macau" next May, as per invitation by the International Institute of Macau (IIM). His works have lately earned the attention of countless followers on social networks.

Carlos Dias, from Macau, and after completing his secondary education at the Seminary of São José, performed his professional career as a civil servant in the former city hall “Leal Senado de Macau”. He devoted himself to the photography when he was 26 years old, with a Pentax SLR, Sportmatic, in 1969. Since then, with a privileged ability to observe and capture images, he focuses mainly on subjects of Macau, with several awards at International halls. However, eleven years later, in 1980, Carlos Dias retired from the photography circle for more than 30 years, until, in 2013, surrendered to the gift of his daughter - a Canon 5D - decided to return to dedicate himself to the photography. He has now reestablished a photographic script through the streets of his hometown (Macau) on a weekly basis, and enjoys recording events and festivals in the city. His specialty is nocturnal photographs, on rainy days or when water produces reflections from the wet floor in the streets of Macau.

In the current digital age, his photographs have become popular after being inserted in the social networks, counting with more than 7,000 followers in Facebook. His work is captured in HDR (High Dynamic Range) with vivid colors and shades, giving the impression that many of his photographs are true paintings. Carlos Dias has captured Macau with his own style, portraying in particular the unique lanes, platters, events, festivities and traditions that belong to this town.

The IIM intends with this exhibition to keep alive this magic, portrayed in images of the various corners of this city, which go beyond the tourist attractions of Macau. After the exhibition, IIM also intends to launch a book with photographs of the exhibition, scheduled for this year.

The exhibition will be organized by IIM with the sponsorship of the Macao Foundation, from May 2 to 11, at the Chun Chou Tong Pavilion in Lou Lim Ieoc Garden. The venue is an institutional support of the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
