Tangibly material traces of Portuguese presence still seen in Malaysia, and more specifically in Melaka, are few, but they are significant on the Malaysian national stage. Certain Portuguese things have cultural and symbolic importance in the country, traces of history and hybridity that signify one more intimate levels are still to be seen in some people’s faces, in words and in efforts to preserve Kristang language, customs and cuisine.

This book about Luso-Asians from Malaysia, the fourth with Luso-Asian portraits by architect João Palla Martins, includes texts by Ana Paula Cleto Godinho, Director of Macau Delegation of the Orient Foundation, and Peter Zabielskis, Professor at University of Macau.
